One of the more controversial topics discussed since the E3 conference last week has been the DRM restrictions that Microsoft is planning to introduce with its next gen console – Xbox One. The restrictions have been described as ‘anti-consumerist’ and include:
- Requirement for an internet connection to start games
- Limitations on using and sharing games (up to 10 people, one at a time)
- Restrictions on trading in used games (subject to game publishers’ policies)
- Kinect always on
- Price point of $499
Hmm, as someone who spends a lot of time on new feature planning, I have to wonder … who came up with this idea and how did this get executive approval? Not only does this give Sony’s PS4 a huge upper hand long before the planned product launch timeframe, it also has the potential to adversely impact Microsoft’s reputation and could hurt consumer loyalty. Come on, Microsoft! Do you really think the gamer community will tolerate this or that investors won’t notice when the quarterly earnings release for the Entertainment & Devices division takes a nose dive due a significant decrease in sales of Xbox One as compared to Xbox 360?
